As the society has become more complicated and diverse, importance leisure time has grown significantly. Although people might strive to have more leisure time in the future, I strongly disagree with the idea that we humans will have more leisure time in the future.
Firstly, people’s desire for consumption will increase. Technological progress and increase of the mass production will lead to people getting used to consuming things. To afford expenses incurred from their craving for material consumption, they will try to earn money rather than to have leisure time. As time goes by, their thirst for consumption will intensify and the conduct of consumption will set in as an unconditional pursuit.
Secondly, polarization will be aggravated. Starting from the 1980’s, neoliberalism has expanded its leverage on political institutions and people’s thoughts. Unlike their insistence that free competition will lead to both economic growth and welfare improvement, elimination of legal restrictions will lead to economic disparity. Although the total sum of the revenue might increase, people who are lying under the pyramid of economic class will lack income. The poor must constantly be working hard to earn their livings due to the fixation of the economic strata derived from the high cost of high-class education.
To sum up, I disagree with the statement that people in the future will have more leisure time for there will be many social problems such as excessive pursuit of material and isolation between the poor and the rich which causes people to work more rather than to have spare time.
